Choosing The Right Harness For Your Dog

Look for a sturdy harness that is easy to control. A “no-pull” harness will give you more control over your dog on walks and alleviate pressure on his neck and back. Also, multiple leash rings give you more options for training, etc. and minimizes chance of escape.

Soft and mesh harnesses are the best option for dogs under 30 pounds.  A harness will alleviate the pressure on small, delicate dogs and keep your dog from straining his neck or damaging his trachea. For dogs with broader chests – like dachshunds, french bulldogs, pugs, etc – look for a “step-in” harness that can expand around a large chest, or a stretchy fabric that will cover the chest. For tiny pups under 10 pounds, a lightweight harness that drops low around the chest (to minimize neck strain) is your best option.

Buy a couple Kong toys (or any dog toy that can be stuffed with treats) and fill them with a few treats first. Then, spread peanut butter or plain yogurt into the rest of the toy. Pop them in the freezer and you will have a stash of yummy and long lasting treats for your pup while you’re gone.

Bonus: Kong toys are now made in the USA so they are safe for your dog to chew!

Dog Shampoo – What to Look For

dog shampoo for itchy skinWhen looking for a good quality dog shampoo, it’s important to look for ingredients that won’t dry out or irritate the skin and coat. First, it should be soap and detergent free. A coconut base will clean your dog’s skin and coat without the harsh effects of soap or detergent. Next, look for ingredients that will alleviate your dog’s skin and coat issues. For example, if your dog has allergies or any type of skin flare up, look for soothing ingredients like tea tree oil, aloe, vitamin E, and Shea butter. Oatmeal shampoos are great for sensitive skin. Some dog shampoos are a shampoo/conditioner combo. This can be great if your dog has a long coat that needs to be detangled. Here are some great options…
